The topics/modules covered in this course are as follows. There may be optional opportunities to extend learning in an in-person setting, such as technique workshops or off-site trips.

Materials

Students are expected to provide their own materials and supplies to be successful in this course. All materials suggested are listed in the course and consist of a variety of simple art tools and equipment that can be purchased from a variety of stores at a reasonable price. CBe-learn does not have any materials available for students at this time.

Course Outline

Art 30

  • Prerequisite – Art 20
  • 5 Credits

Art 30 is an immersive and somewhat self-directed course, designed to guide students toward developing a personal style, expand and refine their repertoire of drawing techniques and make art based on personal experiences and messages.  Through four modules, students will create pieces that will be showcased in a digital portfolio.

Materials

This course leaves media choices up to students in many situations. Students should have a range of art supplies to work with. Additionally, there is one mandatory acrylic painting project that students will need materials for.

Course Outline

Module 1 | Introduction to the Course - In this module, you will create a series of small illustrations to introduce yourself to me. Then you will explore themes, materials and techniques that interest you, and create a personal thematic style spread. This will help you organize your ideas and inspirations, preparing for future assignments in the course.

Module 2 | Sketchbook Investigation - This module is made up of a series of lessons. Students will complete a total of 6 out of 8 of the lessons. Three tasks are mandatory, and there is a choice of three additional tasks based on student interest. The hope for this module is to build confidence, expand skills, and prepare for more in-depth projects later in the course.

Module 3 | Project Explorations - Through a combination of guided assignments and self-directed projects, students will explore their creative potential and refine their skills. Emphasis will be placed on idea generation, thoughtful execution, and reflective feedback.

Module 4 | Culminating Projects - In this module, students will explore the concept of personal artistic style by creating a large-scale artwork of their choice. They will have the freedom to select the concept, style, and media that best represent their vision. This project will serve as the centrepiece of their digital portfolio, which will include other pieces that showcase their artistic growth and individuality. To conclude the module, students will participate in a major critique, where they will present their work to peers for feedback and reflection.
