Live, Independent, and Face to Face Learning

Live Independent Facetoface

At CBe-learn Jr High, learning happens in three important ways: live, independent, and face to face. All three are required parts of our program. Together, they give students a balance of flexibility and structure that helps them succeed.

Live learning means joining teachers and classmates in real time on Google Meet.

Independent learning happens on D2L, where students complete lessons and assignments on their own schedule.

Face to face learning takes place at Bel-Aire School and connects students to the school community in important ways.

Even though we are an online school, face to face time is still required for things like orientation, tests and quizzes, and some physical education activities. These in-person experiences make sure students feel part of the school community and that their learning is supported in the best way possible.

We know that families need flexibility, so we offer alternate dates for orientation and other in-person times when necessary. However, it is important to know that all three parts of the program—live, independent, and face to face—are required for every student. This balance is what makes our program complete.

Learning Technologies

While all course content is hosted inside the Brightspace by D2L learning management system, our teachers also use Google Workspace for Education in a variety of capacities, including Google Meet for live sessions.

Family, School and Student: the Online Learning Team

Student School Family

The key members of the student’s Online Learning Team are the Student, Family and School.

Increased independence is an important element of the junior high developmental stage. Our experience has shown that students are most successful when independence is built gradually through consistent work habits, mutually supported in both the home and school environment.

A Typical Week

  • Similar to an in-person school, CBe-learn students at the junior high level can expect to dedicate a minimum of 20-25 hours per week to learning across all subjects. This will be distributed between both synchronous (live) and asynchronous learning activities.
  • In addition to this, students may be assigned up to one hour of homework in the evening.
  • There is a set schedule where students are expected to be online, learning in real-time with their teacher.

Live Learning with Google Meet

  • Google Meet is an online shared environment where students can communicate with teachers and share information in a visual and auditory way.
  • There is a shared whiteboard space where files, drawings or presentations can be uploaded and shared.
  • It uses voice technology, so with a headset or microphone, students can talk and listen directly to teachers or classmates.
  • It can be used with the full class, small groups, or as a one-on-one communication tool.
  • It takes place in real time and can be much more dynamic than text-based communication methods.

Teacher Advisor: The Key Contact

  • At CBe-learn, every student is part of a TA (Teacher Advisor) group. The TA is a dedicated teacher who supports students with both learning and well-being. This regular time together provides a welcoming start to the week, a chance to connect, and a place to share important updates.
  • TAs build strong relationships with their students, making sure each one feels known, supported, and connected to the school community. They also support students through important planning, such as high school course selection, overseeing Individual Program Plans (IPPs), and establishing personal goals.
  • The TA program is an essential part of our Health and Wellness focus, ensuring that every student has the guidance and care needed to be successful and thrive.

Attendance Reporting

  • If a student is not present in synchronous classes they will be marked absent.
  • If this form is not completed on or prior to the date of absence contact will be made home via telephone and email.
  • If your child is absent for any reason, please complete and submit the Parent Attendance Reporting form at the following link: https://forms.office.com/r/KFgeNeYVCn

Communication

CBe-learn online teachers do not have access to voicemail and do not work full-time onsite at a school.

Students

  • Junior High students should contact teachers through the Private Discussions in Brightspace (D2L).
  • Each student has a private discussion in their class. This is a private space shared only with the student and the teacher. Students should be in the habit of checking their private discussions every day.

Families

  • Parents and Guardians can contact teachers through email which can be found in student courses in Brightspace (D2L), or by calling the school office.
  • Specific questions about course content, assessment or reporting can be sent directly to the child's teacher(s).

For any specific questions about online learning, CBe-learn and our Jr High program, your primary point of contact is Monti Tanner, Assistant Principal: (mrtanner@cbe.ab.ca).
