Attendance & Engagement

At CBe-learn, consistent attendance and active engagement are fundamental to student success in an online learning environment. The following outlines the expectations and structures in place to support students across all grade levels.

Grades 1 - 6 (Elementary Online)

Online Engagement

Elementary online learners engage in live sessions daily.  Students participate with their cameras on.  They use other interactive methods including their microphone, breakout rooms, the chat, polls etc. during online sessions.  Students submit tasks regularly and respond to teacher provided feedback.  Attendance is recorded for each live session and contributes to a student’s overall attendance record. Guardians of students who regularly demonstrate the rhythm and routines for online learning may be invited to consider a small portion of the synchronous schedule as optional.

In-Person Engagement

All elementary students are expected to attend a minimum of 3 in-person assessment days per year.  Some students register, and then are expected to attend regularly, in-person classes once weekly. There are also several optional in-person learning events offered throughout the school year.

Support Meeting Engagement Requirements

Parents/Guardians are informed when their child is having difficulty meeting any of the above engagement criteria.  When necessary, CBe-learn administration works with families to establish and follow an Attendance Improvement Plan.

Grades 7 - 9 (Junior High Online)

Online learning provides a unique opportunity for individualized and independent learning for Jr High students. Our students are expected to log in to their courses every school day. Organizational days and professional development days are advertised in the students' Homeroom course.

Participation & Engagement

Students are expected to actively participate in the program. Indicators of participation and engagement include, but are not limited to, completing all learning tasks, submitting course work, responding to private discussion messages (PDMs) in a timely fashion, contributing to online and synchronous live session discussions, actively participating in interactive class activities, making presentations or reports and attending mandatory planned functions or events. Attendance at voluntary functions or events is at the discretion of the family.

Synchronous Sessions & Attendance

Regular attendance in synchronous classes is vital for academic success and meaningful engagement. Students in Grades 7–9 must attend all scheduled synchronous sessions, which will remain consistent in day and time throughout the year.

Jr High Parent: Absence Notification Form

Attendance in synchronous classes is tracked daily to ensure students are actively engaged in their education. If a student is absent for any reason, families must complete the Parent Attendance Reporting Form available here on or before the date of the absence. If the form is not submitted, follow-up contact will be made by phone and email.

This attendance report must be filled out for each absence, no matter the reason.

Monthly attendance reports are reviewed, and students with unacceptable attendance will be contacted to address concerns. While we strive to work collaboratively with families to resolve attendance issues, persistent concerns may require a face-to-face meeting with administration to develop and sign an Attendance Improvement Plan (AIP)

Grades 10 - 12 (Senior High Online)

High School is an exciting time of increased independence, responsibility and self-direction. These skills are developed gradually and in partnership with parents / guardians and teachers all working together to support to your engagement, achievement and well-being.  Designing and following a personalized schedule along with time management and communication are essential skills we encourage you to practice and develop.

Participation

In the Senior High online program, you are expected to maintain a regular presence within your online courses. This means interacting with the course material consistently and learning to use the numerous digital tools available to you. While daily work is not mandatory, it is strongly recommended to maintain a regular schedule to be successful online.

Teachers will provide support for you in a variety of ways: both synchronous (live group and individual sessions) and asynchronous (course content and instructional design, private and group discussion forums). You are encouraged to take advantage of all opportunities to work collaboratively with your peers, advocate for your learning needs and ask for assistance from your teachers when you need it.

Live Room Sessions

Each online course will offer a minimum of one hour synchronous (live) instructional time per week - this may be broken into two 30-minute sessions. Attendance is not mandatory, but strongly encouraged, as instruction will be focused on common questions, effective strategies and essential understandings from the course content. These sessions will be recorded and posted for you to view later if you can't attend during the scheduled time. You may want to review these recorded sessions to master concepts and use as great study tool.

Teachers will also offer a further one hour of tutorial or drop-in support each week for you to interact live with your teacher, when needed. Both live room sessions and virtual office hours will be posted inside each course home page - be sure to note these in your calendar.

Assessment:

Similar to in-person classes, all courses are offered in a semester format.  This includes consistent feedback, timelines and assessments following a scheduled timeline.
